Review of the Mikrotik Routerboard wAP AC

This week Mikrotik released the Routerboard wAP AC. Internally it resembles the recently released hAP AC a lot so I bought some to take a look!

I wanted to try something new so instead of making a written review about the wAP AC, I made a sort of unboxing and first look video.

Technically the wAP AC shares a lot of the internals of the hAP AC so I don’t think I’m going to publish a completely new review about it. These are the biggest differences between the two:
  • Weather sealed outdoor housing
  • Accepts both active and passive POE (Comes with a passive POE injector included)
  • 1x Gigabit Ethernet port
  • 2×2 2.4Ghz and 3×3 5.0Ghz wireless (2.4Ghz has one chain less)

And that’s it, it shares the same SOC, the same radio’s and is generally the same platform. In my quick tests using CAPsMAN and without CAPsMAN it basically shows the same performance. Since I don’t have any 3×3 2.4Ghz devices, I can’t measure the impact that has beyond what my normal clients see but those are 2×2 at most.

You can find my review of the hAP AC over here: https://blog.quindorian.org/2016/02/review-of-mikrotik-hap-ac-and-great.html

Please take a look at my video and let me know what you think! It’s a first try at doing something like this, so don’t be too harsh. 😉
